About Dr. Vaibhav Bagaria

Dr. Vaibhav Bagaria is Director and Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai, and one of the earliest surgeons in India to adopt robotic joint replacement. Over twenty-two years of practice he has treated patients across the full range of bone and joint conditions, with a particular focus on robotic knee and hip replacement, partial knee replacement, sports injury and arthroscopy, and complex pelvic and acetabular reconstruction.

He graduated MBBS from Government Medical College, Nagpur with three gold medals, and completed MS (Orthopaedics) at KEM Hospital, Mumbai. He went on to train at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, at the Endoklinik and König-Ludwig-Haus in Germany, and across Australia at Sir Charles Gairdner and Hollywood Private Hospital in Perth, Avenue Hospital in Melbourne, and Sportsmed SA in Adelaide. He is the first Indian surgeon to top the international S.I.C.O.T. Diploma examination, and today serves as President and National Delegate of SICOT India.

Alongside his clinical practice, Dr. Bagaria is an active researcher with more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and over 5,200 citations. His patented technique for converting medical scan data into 3D-printable models is now used widely in orthopaedic surgical planning, and his interest in regenerative medicine led him to establish India's first private tissue bank in Mumbai. His current research examines how far robotic assistance genuinely improves on surgical judgement in knee replacement including in stiff knees, where conventional technique is most difficult.

He teaches for the National Board of Examinations, trains visiting international fellows in robotic technique, and is writing two books commissioned by Thieme and CBS on cartilage regeneration and comprehensive knee surgery. In 2008 he was chosen to represent the Indian medical community in the Beijing Olympic Torch Relay held in India.
