Introduction

Dr. Vaibhav Bagaria has treated injuries in professional athletes and recreational players for over two decades. He provides sports injury treatment in Mumbai at Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, covering the knee, shoulder and ankle from ligament reconstruction to cartilage restoration.

He trained in sports medicine and arthroscopy in Australia, at Sir Charles Gairdner and Hollywood Private Hospital in Perth, Avenue Hospital in Melbourne, and Sportsmed SA in Adelaide.

What is arthroscopy?

Arthroscopy is keyhole surgery of a joint. A small camera is inserted through an incision of a few millimetres, letting the surgeon see inside the joint on a screen and work through similarly small incisions.

Because healthy tissue is disturbed far less than in open surgery, there is generally less pain, less scarring and a faster recovery. It also allows several problems to be assessed and treated in one procedure a meniscus tear and a cartilage injury found alongside an ACL tear, for example.

Sports injury arthroscopy procedure

What we treat

Knee

  • ACL and PCL reconstruction replacing torn cruciate ligaments with a graft
  • Meniscus repair stitching the torn meniscus where the tear pattern allows, preferred because preserving the meniscus protects the knee long term
  • Partial meniscectomy trimming conservatively where repair is not possible
  • Cartilage repair and restoration for focal defects, particularly in younger patients
  • Removal of loose fragments causing locking or catching

Shoulder

  • Rotator cuff repair reattaching the torn tendon to bone
  • Shoulder stabilisation repairing the labrum and tightening the capsule for recurrent dislocation
  • Subacromial decompression creating space where impingement is causing tendon wear
  • Frozen shoulder release dividing the tightened capsule where stiffness persists despite treatment

Ankle

  • Ligament repair and reconstruction for recurrent instability after repeated sprains
  • Ankle arthroscopy treating cartilage damage, loose fragments and impingement

Who this procedure is for

Arthroscopic surgery suits patients whose injury is causing instability, mechanical symptoms, or persistent limitation despite proper rehabilitation.

Surgery is generally the right step when:

  • A ligament is torn and the joint gives way
  • The joint locks or catches
  • Symptoms persist despite several months of physiotherapy
  • Recurrent dislocation is limiting sport or work
  • A repairable tear is identified in a younger patient
  • You want to return to pivoting or overhead sport with confidence

Many injuries recover fully without surgery , and Dr. Bagaria will always establish whether rehabilitation can get you there first. Where it can, that is the better route. Where it cannot, surgery is planned with the rehabilitation programme agreed beforehand.

Before your surgery

Assessment and planning

Consultation, examination and imaging usually MRI, which identifies associated injuries that change the plan. Fitness assessment and blood tests.

For ligament surgery, restoring movement and reducing swelling before the operation matters, so a period of physiotherapy beforehand is often part of the plan.

How to prepare

  • Complete any pre-operative physiotherapy you have been given
  • Medication review, on medical advice only
  • Stop smoking if you smoke
  • Arrange transport home and someone to stay with you overnight for day surgery
  • Prepare for crutches or a sling if the procedure requires one

Things to discuss with your surgeon

  • Whether rehabilitation alone could achieve what you need
  • What the surgery will involve for your specific injury
  • What the rehabilitation programme looks like week by week
  • What return to your particular sport will require
  • How pain will be managed
  • What follow-up looks like
  • What the alternatives are, including waiting

Results what to expect

Most patients return to their previous activities. Outcome depends on the quality of rehabilitation, whether associated injuries were present, and following the graduated return plan.

Where meniscus or cartilage was also treated, preserving as much tissue as possible is the priority, since that is what protects the joint long term.
